The Mission Hills location of La Puerta is a more laid-back alternative to the Gaslamp original, with an adobe fireplace, teak ceilings, walls covered in plants, and windows that open onto the patio. The menu sticks to tacos, burritos, and Tijuana-style hot dogs, making it an easy option when you want a date night that feels fun without turning into a big production. Come early on a weeknight and grab a table near the fire.

Buona Forchetta’s South Park location is built around a wood-fired oven brought over from Naples and a patio out back strung with lanterns. The pizzas are Neapolitan and the pasta is made in house, with plenty on the menu to order for the table and share. Ask for the patio on a warm night. It has all the atmosphere of a more expensive date spot without the price tag.

The Prado sits inside Balboa Park’s Spanish-Colonial House of Hospitality, so you can make a whole date out of getting there. Wander through the park or one of the museums before dinner, then grab a table overlooking the tiled courtyard and fountain. There’s also a skylit solarium and an open terrace, with a menu that pulls from Latin and Italian cooking.

Bali Hai has been on Shelter Island for more than 70 years, with a tiki-inspired dining room looking out across the bay toward the downtown skyline. Ask for a window table around sunset and order one of the restaurant’s signature Mai Tais while the light changes over the water. It’s a little kitschy, but that’s part of the fun, especially for a date that doesn’t need to take itself too seriously.

Starlite is tucked at the bottom of a tiled entry ramp, opening into a low-lit dining room beneath a huge geometric wood chandelier. The space feels more like a cocktail lounge than a traditional restaurant, but there’s a full New American menu behind it. It’s a good pick when you want dinner and drinks to feel like part of the same night. Book the “standard” option when reserving if you want to sit in the main dining room.

Herb & Wood is a warm, low-lit restaurant in Little Italy built around an open wood-burning hearth, with an indoor fireplace tucked off to the side. Much of the Mediterranean-meets-California menu comes off the fire and is meant to be ordered across the table and shared. It’s polished enough for an occasion but still lively enough that dinner doesn’t feel overly formal.

Coasterra sits at the edge of Harbor Island, with the downtown skyline directly across the water and the Coronado Bridge off to one side. On a warm evening, take a table on the patio by the fire pit and watch the city light up across the bay. If it’s cooler, the glass-walled dining room gives you much of the same view from inside. The menu focuses on modern Mexican cooking and Baja seafood, and reservations are worth making ahead.

Cesarina is a colorful Point Loma trattoria with a bougainvillea-covered patio that’s especially nice for a date on a warm night. Pasta is made in house, with plenty of dishes to split, and the tiramisu is finished tableside. Reservations can book up weeks ahead, so this is one to plan in advance rather than save for a last-minute dinner.

The Marine Room sits directly on the sand at La Jolla Shores, close enough to the water that at high tide, waves break against the picture windows just a few feet from your table. Time dinner around sunset or one of the restaurant’s High Tide Dinners, which are scheduled around some of the biggest tides of the year. This is the place on the list to save for an anniversary or a date when you really want to go all out.

Bertrand at Mister A’s sits 12 stories above Bankers Hill, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace overlooking downtown, the bay, Coronado Bridge, and Balboa Park. You’ll also see planes coming in low over the city on their way to the airport. The contemporary American menu has French influences, and the setting is unapologetically special occasion. Book around sunset if you can, then stay as the city lights come on below.
