The Best Date Spots in San Diego

The bluffs along Point Loma face straight into the Pacific, making Sunset Cliffs one of the easiest places in the city to turn an ordinary evening into a date. Park near Ladera Street, walk along the cliffs, and find a spot to sit before the sun starts to drop. Bring a blanket and something to drink, then stick around after sunset when the crowds begin to thin and the sky turns blue.

You don’t need much of a plan for a date at Balboa Park. Wander through the Botanical Building, cross over to the cactus garden, and stop by the Spanish Village artist studios along the way. On Sunday afternoons, you can catch a free concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. The grounds and gardens are free to explore, so you can keep walking until you’re ready to stop somewhere for dinner or a drink.

Start with dinner and a michelada in the Fiesta de Reyes courtyard, where live mariachi often plays, then wander through Old Town’s adobe buildings and quieter side streets. The historic park is free to explore, so there’s no real itinerary to follow after dinner. Walk past the old schoolhouse and Whaley House, or just see where the night takes you.

Skip the bridge and make getting to Coronado part of the date. The ferry ride from downtown takes about 15 minutes, with views of the bay and skyline along the way. Once you arrive, rent bikes or make your way toward Orange Avenue and the Hotel del Coronado, then take a long walk along the beach. Time the ferry home for sunset, when the downtown skyline starts to light up across the water.

Friday nights are a particularly good time to visit the San Diego Natural History Museum. Admission drops by half after 5 p.m., and you can wander the exhibits without the daytime crowds before heading up to the rooftop for a drink overlooking Balboa Park. Grab a beer or glass of wine, order a few small plates, and watch the park quiet down below.

A comedy show takes some of the pressure off having to carry the conversation all night, especially on a first or second date. American Comedy Co. is an intimate stand-up room in the Gaslamp that brings in touring headliners alongside local comics. Shows run around 90 minutes, leaving plenty of time to grab a drink afterward. Unless getting roasted together sounds romantic, maybe skip the front row.

Lean into the amusement park date and spend a night at Belmont Park. Ride the Giant Dipper, the wooden roller coaster that has been running along the Mission Beach boardwalk since 1925, split a funnel cake, and get overly competitive at a few midway games. The park itself is free to walk through, and you can step straight onto the beach when you’ve had enough. Go after dark when the rides light up and the daytime beach crowds have cleared out.

For a Saturday morning date, wander through the Little Italy Mercato and build breakfast as you go. Six blocks of West Date Street fill with produce, flowers, and prepared-food stalls before spilling into Piazza della Famiglia. Pick up a few things to share, then walk down India Street and stop somewhere for coffee or a glass of wine when you’re ready. There’s no reservation or real plan required, which is part of the appeal.

Trade the usual movie theater for a rooftop overlooking the bay and downtown skyline. Rooftop Cinema Club in Little Italy has deck chairs, wireless headphones, a full bar, and a lineup that leans toward older favorites and crowd-pleasers. Book a loveseat for two and arrive early enough to grab a drink and watch the sun go down before the movie starts.

If dinner and drinks are starting to feel a little predictable, take a tandem kayak out from La Jolla Shores instead. Guided tours paddle through the Ecological Reserve toward the Seven Caves, passing sandstone cliffs, sea lions, and, in summer, leopard sharks swimming below. Most trips last around two hours, and sharing a tandem kayak gives you something to figure out together along the way. Take one of the later tours for softer afternoon light along the cliffs.
