Make Money Online Without Information Products

Work from home. Easy and simple to do.

Dan Lopez and I recently did a very successful and profitable internet marketing experiment combining techniques and marketing strategies openly published by leading internet marketers.

We made a sale within seven days

of launching a series of mini-sites and we immediately ranked on Google with solid page one and page two results. And we started getting traffic. Free traffic. No PPC, no advertising, no videos, no articles, no press releases. Solid “I am ready to buy” qualified traffic and buyers. Immediately.

You get the picture. It can be daunting. One of the earliest mentors in my career was Jim Koester, owner of The Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor, Michigan. He was the king, and I mean the king of wholesale liquidation and generating huge crowds to his Weekend Public Market. Some very good advice which he gave me early on about products and buying and selling in the liquidation industry was, “Don’t look at it, don’t love it, don’t touch it. Buy it and sell it. Immediately.” The other piece of good advice he gave me which came in handy when I owned my bookstore was, “Never confuse crowds with money.” Time and time again he proved to be so “right on” with that advice.

It was that advice from Jim Koester which helped frame in Dan’s and my mindset for this “money-getting” internet marketing experiment. Dan and I didn’t really want just crowds, we wanted qualified buyers (who doesn’t, right?).

It was easy to follow simple guidelines

Dan established some site design guidelines to attract and capture the eyes of site visitors. For instance, all crucial elements above the fold, a compelling “call to action” graphic image, the correct balance of H1 and H2 tagged headlines and sub-heads, strategically-placed keyword phrases in each paragraph, and crucial keyword-rich links to similar websites.

The best part is we didn’t have to spend a dime on additional websites or hosting or domains. We used an existing network of personal websites and within seven days of creating the mini-sites we made the first sale utilizing the principles of The FAR Approach.

Pretty simple logic. Focus. Action. Results.

We focused on the highly competitive HDTV market niche within the electronics market. Pretty gutsy if you ask me to try and compete as newbies in a highly keyword-competitive market. The simple research we utilized showed us there were huge advertising dollars being spent on the HDTV market niche, and even though we started after the Christmas shopping season, we knew we could catch some of the HDTV Super Bowl traffic. We weren’t expecting to get all the traffic. We just wanted a small piece of that traffic to visit our sites. We just wanted to generate interest and free traffic. And we did. Surprisingly the traffic hasn’t really slowed down much (except for on Super Bowl Sunday!) because of the way we wove our long-tail keyword phrases throughout the text, meta tags and descriptions. It was very easy to do. You can do this too.

Ok, you might be asking yourself, “How can I do this?”

Is it simple? Does it really work? Can I do this if I don’t have any experience selling on the internet?

The answer to each of your questions is yes, you can do this too. If you can browse and identify bestselling products on Amazon (or from any other vendor with an affiliate program) and use a simple HTML template, you can duplicate everything we did and generate traffic, and make commissions on products shoppers buy. This, at the “very most simple best” is all you have to do. And I have even figured out a way to do this for free, without having to go through the expense and upkeep of buying domain names and hosting websites.

The theory is simple.

Catch the people when they are ready to buy. Choose your products to match popular gift-giving holidays (Hallmark has certainly defined those days for us!), discover your own niche to match your personal passion, or just get downright down and dirty and competitive and go after established market niches.

Your start up is simple and easy.

Take it at your own pace in your spare time or go into it full time. You just have to add the words to the pages. And they don’t even have to be your words. Just gather the data and add your own flavor and personality to what you are selling.

You can’t take ACTION if you are in the middle of the confusion and chaos of “Information Overload”!

What is your story? What do you sell online? Or are you like so many, filled with questions and the “how do I do this?”

I’ve been involved with many aspects of internet marketing since 1995 when I launched www.known.com. I took ten years off to open a bookstore in Suttons Bay, Known Books. Sure I continued selling online and building affiliate programs and websites, but I couldn’t devote as much time to it as it demanded of me, so some changes were made.

As a bookseller my customers know they can depend on me to recommend a good book to them. I love their expectations. And what I have found is that the same questions are coming at me again, only this time it is about “all things internet marketing” because my friends and customers know I am a fanatic and neurotic and compulsive about doing tremendous research to learn something new and to really understand and apply what I’ve discovered.

Amazon To Offer Wine Online

Online retailer Amazon.com will start selling wine produced in the U.S. by early October making it available to its domestic customers.

Napa Valley Vintners, a nonprofit organization representing more than 300 vintners in California, has started workshops for wineries that want to sell their wine on Amazon, according to Terry Hall, communications director for the group.

“They have been working for a while on this wine project. Now they are signing up the wineries,” Hall told Reuters. “They’re fast-tracking it right now.”

Amazon will sell wine in about 26 states and wine sold on the site will come from all areas of the country.

In 2007 total U.S. wine sales were between $30 billion and $32 billion, according to Barbara Insel, president of Stonebridge Research Group, a company focused on the wine industry.

Amazon will be working with New Vine Logistics, a Napa, California firm that operates in wine fulfillment and can ship to 45 states. Amazon is working with the company to ensure that the wine is legally shipped.

Customers enrolled in Amazon Prime, a discount shipping program will qualify for free shipping on any wine purchases.

“The good news is it (Amazon selling wine) puts some big muscle behind direct-to-consumer so consumers of wine should benefit,” Hall said.

Google Continues to Dominate Search Online Market Share at 61.9%

comScore logoComScore has released its monthly analysis results for search market share in the U.S. showing a wider gap between Google and Yahoo.

Google sites had 61.9% of the market, while Yahoo! followed at a not-so-close second with 20.5%. The gap between the two has grown since June, when Google and Yahoo! controlled 61.5% and 20.9% respectively.

It will be interesting to watch what happens with the search engine online market share as we head into and go through the upcoming holiday seasons.

Something to watch is consumer versus business search behavior when the need arises to get directions to make the perfect Halloween costume, to find the best homemade Turkey recipes for Thanksgiving, to get information on the best wines to serve with holiday dinners, searches on travel sites and gas prices sites as family members try to get together for the holidays, and not to be overlooked will be all the retail consumer goods searches to the large retail sites. And let’s not overlook all things football and sports related.

comScore July 2008 search engine online market share report

In research like that of ComScore’s, the information should not be taken as gospel. As PCWorld points out:

ComScore’s reports are not controversy-free. The company was criticized in April for a report on paid search clicks, as ComScore’s measurements rely mainly on online recruitment techniques, usually dismissed by traditional pollsters. The search market share report presented yesterday relies on a similar panel with ComScore’s controversial one from April…

That said, it doesn’t look like Google has any threat to its search market share, and with their current push into the mobile sector, it is doubtful that any such threat will emerge in the foreseeable future.

Ad relevance can be better, even with boundaries

Any ad server can drop an advertisement in front of an Internet user, but AlmondNet wants that opportunity to be relevant as well as timely.

The typical Internet user spends 5 percent of their time online expressing purchase intent behavior. Mike Benedek, VP at behavioral targeting tech firm AlmondNet, also told WebProNews in a phone interview how such users spend 90 percent of their time browsing at content related to that intent.

I’ve been thinking about how Mike Benedek’s comments mirror what is on known.com’s main page. I spent a great deal of time on Sunday thinking about the words each strata of the internet marketing industry has found to say the same thing! And every time I read something which is well written I regret that I didn’t write it first!

Of course if I used Mike’s phrases with some of my clients I think they would look at me and nod their heads and later ask someone, “What did she say?”

Are you familiar with Hubspot? I had the pleasure recently to have a conversation with Buck Flather after I used their WebsiteGrader service. I tried to explain to him that they were the “luxury car” version of what we do. HubSpot is about “Inbound Marketing.”

On the other hand, in my world, in conversations with business owners and merchants I usually make a comment about how more and more people know more about them than they realize because internet users are doing their research on the prospect first. Then I ask them, “Are they finding you?” Because we all know they are looking.

They aren’t always being served with what might fit best for them as far as advertising goes when they do. The online ad business suffers as well; although premium ad placements generate substantial CPM rates, Benedek said plenty of ads go on display elsewhere for much less than $1/CPM.

This represents the significant challenge for ad networks, in monetizing all across their reach rather than at a handful or less of peak sites. To do better, behavioral targeting promises better relevance in ad delivery across the Internet.

Some verticals, like auto and travel, experience success now with behavioral targeting, even though Benedek classified the field as being in the first or second inning of a long ball game. The market is evolving toward a profile-based medium, he said.

When it gets there, advertisers will be able to buy faces, after a fashion, rather than spaces for ads. Given last year’s heightened awareness of behavioral targeting, we asked just how much of a face such an approach might get.

Benedex said AlmondNet, like its fellow Network Advertising Initiative members, fully complies with principles and opt-out processes aimed at keeping personally identifiable information out of the mix of details used for behavioral targeting.

In its place comes non-persistent cookies, expiring after a period of time, that help deliver the targeted ad to people across an ad network as they travel from place to place. Time sensitivity matters greatly in complementing relevance, as a more recent site visit may indicate stronger intent to buy.

To avoid the big hammer of federal regulation, AlmondNet and others will adhere to meaningful and enforceable self-regulation, like working only with partners who scrub personally identifiable info out of data used to build behavioral targeting solutions.

Gaining consumer trust will go a long way toward progress in behavioral targeting. People very much want to see content related to their interests, and advertising falls into that space.

Research Reveals Email Increases Brand Favorability and Awareness

Marketers know that email can be a great direct response channel, encouraging consumers to take immediate action and help boost sales, but few thought of email as a powerful branding medium.

Until now.

A new study conducted by Dynamic Logic shows inbox advertising can provide significant branding benefits in addition to the acquisition strengths typically attributed to the media channel.

The study, conducted with Datran Media and eHarmony, reveals that inbox advertising made 37.7 percent of people aware of one of the tested campaigns. These people otherwise would not have been aware of it. In addition, unaided brand awareness increased 11.5 percentage points, and brand favorability increased 7.3 percentage points.

The results counter mainstream characterizations of inbox advertising as an acquisition-only vehicle. More than many other channels, inbox advertising gives companies the ability to deliver highly targeted messages to opt-in consumers. Because it significantly increases the chances of delivering the right message to the right consumer at the right time, inbox advertising can have the additional benefit of creating a more favorable impression of the company’s brand.

Live Search Update Now Includes Ability to Export Data in CSV Format to Excel for Offline Analysis

Microsoft launched its first major update to Live Search Webmaster Tools since November, adding crawl issue feedback, backlink data, improved filtering, and the ability to export data in CSV format to Excel for offline analysis.

WebProNews got a sneak peak of the update from Live Search’s Jeremiah Andrick and Nathan Buggia, who say, “search has become mission critical” for websites.
