What is Overtone?
Overtone is an AI-enabled dating and matchmaking service founded by Hinge creator, Justin McLeod. The service aims to get to know users through a conversational matchmaker, then uses AI and relationship science to provide a small number of curated introductions. Unlike traditional dating apps, users won’t have to browse through a large pool of profiles or manage multiple chats and matches at once. Instead, Overtone does the searching and makes introductions based on the potential for compatibility. Overtone is not yet available and is expected to launch in select locations by the end of 2026.
Who founded Overtone?
Overtone was founded by Justin McLeod, the founder and former CEO of Hinge. After nearly 15 years building Hinge and helping to shape a dating app experience built around swiping, McLeod announced his departure from the company in December 2025 to launch Overtone. The service had already been under development for roughly a year by a small team within Hinge before officially launching as an independent company. In July 2026, Overtone announced an $18 million seed round backed by FirstMark Capital, Pace Capital, and Match Group.
How does Overtone’s matchmaking work?
New users are led through a voice-and-audio forward conversational interview by Overtone’s matchmaking technology. The service uses insights from the conversation to understand a user’s personality, values, communication style, preferences, and relationship goals. These insights are then used to identify potential compatibility with other users and determine which introductions are worth making. Overtone provides a small number of curated introductions, rather than giving users a large pool of profiles to sort through themselves.
