Leelanau Feed and Seed

When Becky and Nathan Kalchik were making plans to open Leelanau Feed and Seed in Lake Leelanau they had many goals for the business. They knew they wanted to be centrally-located in Leelanau County, and they knew it would have to be a place where animals were always welcome.
The pole building which is home to Leelanau Feed and Seed had been owned by antique collectors. With an opening date scheduled six weeks away, the Kalchiks worked fast to get their store ready - everything had to be done. Thousands and thousands of nails had to be pulled from the rafters. When the Bucklers owned the building antiques were hung from these nails. And they all had to be pulled, then the electrical was run, windows were installed, a new overhead door was added, insulation was put in place and the walls went up, the drop ceiling and lighting were next, and then, working with Richard at Northern Lumber, a custom paint was developed and the walls were painted a perfect warm and welcoming shade of Bourbon Blue.
The lights went on, the OPEN sign was hung and the people and their pets started arriving. The bulletin board began to fill with pictures of pets, animal stories were shared around the community coffee table, and then something magical began to happen, and a new goal was added to the list.
The dogs started coming to the door. The dogs will sit and wait because they know they can come to Leelanau Feed and Seed and always get a treat. Except for the neighbor dog, Sadie, who is still a little bit shy. You guessed it, the new goal of Leelanau Feed and Seed is winning over the neighbor dog, Sadie. A Childhood Memory of the Old Leelanau Co-op Grange Hall
Becky has always loved and enjoyed animals. All kinds. Farm animals, house pets, and all the critters from her childhood in Lake Leelanau - whether it be a bird, a rabbit, or even a family of skunks. They are all special, and she often brought many stray animals home with her.
The seed to always be near animals, and to one day open her own store catering to farm and house animals took hold early in her childhood. The lingering memories of the old Leelanau Co-op that had been in Lake Leelanau "forever" stayed with her over the years. This Grange Hall, owned by the Cradducks was in an old building in town and it was always filled with animals, dusty bags of grain and all the old-timers sitting around talking about farming, and animals. The perfect environment for any animal lover!
Eventually the old building which had been the Leelanau Co-op was torn down and a parking lot is in its place. But it never replaced the memories and the dream. When you walk into Leelanau Feed and Seed the first thing you notice are all the orderly stacks of bags and bags of animal feed and seed. And the people. And the warm greeting followed with questions of how is..... and then you notice the bulletin board loaded with pictures of animals and customer's pets. And sitting right in front of this gallery of animal pictures is a table surrounded by stools, right next to the coffee pot and a refrigerator filled with sodas. And you feel instinctively the casual comfort of being someplace familiar, someplace where the owner of the store is interested in listening to all the news, and personality quirks, about your pets and animals. And then you know that a new generation of an animal food store has been created in Leelanau Feed and Seed.
