Mt. Pleasant Author Chris Zimmerman Unleashes Fourth Novel

MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant author Chris Zimmerman has released his fourth novel, Forty Mile Point, another Michigan-based mystery that will appeal to a wide variety of readers.

Chris Zimmerman
The opening chapter chronicles the disappearance of a man and a woman on a breezy, August afternoon in northern Lake Huron. The woman was an attorney who represented some of Michigan’s most notorious polluters; the man was a congressional aide whose body was never found. Local police departments aren’t convinced that the incident was an accident because of the stash of clues left behind. The case is further complicated by a letter written by the aide to the story’s main character, reporter Derrick Twitchell, in which he said, “I know I’m going to be murdered, but I don’t know when or where.”

Twitchell was introduced in Zimmerman’s third novel, The Covenant Field, which was released in 2007. What Twitchell does with the letter and the resulting trouble is what makes Forty Mile Point such an enjoyable read.
Zimmerman uses settings that are familiar to the residents of Michigan. The Presque Isle lighthouse on the northeast shore plays a significant role, as does a jazz club on Detroit’s north side. Marion, Traverse City, Mackinac Island, Gaylord and the Governor’s Mansion are featured. Forty Mile Point by Chris Zimmerman
The cover image of the Holland Lighthouse was taken by Jenifer Selwa, from Newaygo. It’s eerie, secretive dimension is a hint of what’s to come in the story, where a scene at a haunted lighthouse lends clues to the couple’s disappearance.

With more than 22,000 copies of his previous novels sold, Zimmerman is anxious to deliver his latest work. Much like his previous three, Forty Mile Point has an outdoorsy flavor, a suspense-filled plot, and a satisfying twist at the end Chris Zimmerman has been a writer for the past 20 years, with articles published in many magazines and newspapers. Before The Covenant Field, he published The Secret-Keeper (2005) and Intentional Acts (2004). Best-selling author and Michigan resident Sue Harrison describes Chris as “a fine, fine writer…of a quality equal to and often surpassing the biggest names in the suspense field.”

Online Christmas Shopping - Tips for Holiday Internet Marketing

I just read a post by Jason Lee Miller full of some great tips for holiday marketing. I’m still enjoying the sand gathering on my sandals and he wants me to start thinking about Christmas on the Internet?

Jason wrote, “‘Tis the season already, so get moving.”

Yea, yea, yea, I hear you. I’ll get moving, from one comfortable chair on the deck to another. I read it, so does that mean somewhere in my psyche I’m ninety-percent of the way there (isn’t that the psychological reason why diet books and books on getting organized sell so well?) Well, actually, I did get some instant flashes of some fun things to do with some of my favorite Suttons Bay merchants and some of their products. But Jason, come on, I’m listening to the crickets chirping right now, and you want me to think about landing pages and link building?

Well, come to think of it, he’s right about the time needed to get the pages written, and getting the pages online so they can start to rank. Hmm, and the link building thing, Jason’s got a really good point there too. If I want the other merchants to link to these landing pages I’d better get them built and populated with products so the pages will start to rank because of all those inbound links. Sure, building Christmas shopping pages in August will be easy to implement. Ho-ho-ho!

I guess at this point it is just a matter of deciding on which products, the layout, and the keywords for all that great content. Again, Jason made a great point about how important the content actually is during the holiday shopping season. Jason wrote, “Not only will great content bolster your natural keywords, but it really helps customers make decisions and form trust.”

Adding coupons, free shipping, and an “easy to buy” shopping cart system will also help to increase sales. Another great idea is to ask your customers to tell their friends about their great shopping experience on your site with an easy online form. Oh yea, that’s what that word-of-mouth form of marketing is all about. Not quite viral, but definitely Web 2.0. Isn’t it?

And finally, location. Both online and in your hometown. Very important. Jason stressed the importance of location in this paragraph:

Location, location, location. If you have a physical presence, take advantage of online mapping and other local services. It may be hard to stand out in that big sea of online commerce, but it’s easy to stand out in your hometown. Make sure you target location-specific angles to help people just around the corner find you.

Yes, it is easy to stand out in your hometown. Known Books, the bookstore in Suttons Bay, Michigan certainly does - and has since 1996. Except now we’re down by the water, on the shores of Suttons Bay. That’s why I’ve still got sand gathering on my sandals! And we’re easy to find online as well in that big sea of online Suttons Bay commerce!

Online Swap Meets for Books
Web Sites Let Us
Trade Used Titles;
Wait for ‘Catch-22′
By MARY PILON

Penny-pinching bibliophiles will revel in a new batch of Web sites for paperback swapping. The sites reinvent the classic act of trading summer beach reads and expand summer reading beyond the dusty bookshelves of friends and family.

We tested four Web sites devoted to exchanging books — Paperbackswap.com, Swaptree.com, Bookmooch.com and Bookins.com.

Unlike Amazon.com, users don’t have to pay for the actual book, just shipping. Unlike with a library book, there’s no due date (or late fee). These sites allow readers to browse the collections of site members across the country and unload books that they no longer want in their permanent collections.

Paperbackswap.com says it is the oldest and biggest swapping site. Over 35,000 trades take place a week, according to Richard Pickering, the site’s founder.

Hannes Blum Announces Amazon.com to buy AbeBooks; no terms announced

By Michael Kitchen
Last update: 9:06 a.m. EDT Aug. 1, 2008

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Amazon.com, Inc. said Friday it has reached
a deal to buy online used-book marketplace AbeBooks. No financial terms
were disclosed in the announcement. Amazon said that the deal is expected
to close before the end of the fourth quarter of 2008 and that Canadian-based
AbeBooks will continue to function as a stand-alone operation.
—————–

—————————
Dear Booksellers,

AbeBooks has reached an agreement to be acquired by Amazon.com, Inc. This is a major landmark in the 12-year history of AbeBooks.

AbeBooks will continue to operate as a stand-alone business with all aspects of AbeBooks’ bookseller and customer experience remaining intact. AbeBooks’ headquarters will remain in Victoria, BC, Canada, and our European offices will remain in Dusseldorf, Germany. We will continue to support both our international marketplaces and our domestic marketplace here in Canada. I will continue to lead AbeBooks.

We expect this change to allow AbeBooks to expand its offerings and introduce new features and services to enhance the book buying and selling experience. Amazon is committed to further developing the AbeBooks brand and building upon the success of the past 12 years. This is not the first time AbeBooks has changed hands since being launched in 1996. Hubert Burda Media, a German media company, took a majority shareholding in 2003.

The bookselling community has been a vital component in our success, and we are grateful for your continuing support. We will be happy to answer questions about our new ownership and what the future holds. A bookseller Roundtable will be held on Thursday August 7th at 2:30pm PDT/9:30pm GMT/7:30am AU where I and the Director of Sales & Account Management, Shaun Jamieson, will answer any questions you might have. In addition, the ‘Ask AbeBooks a question’ folder will continue to be available for ongoing questions from the seller community.

We realize this is important news for our community, and we are confident that this acquisition will greatly benefit AbeBooks’ sellers and provide us with many opportunities for future growth.

For more details please see the official release posted today.

Saving the Family Cottage: A Guide to Succession Planning for Your Cottage, Cabin, Camp or Vacation Home

Book Cover Image for Saving the Family Cottage by Stuart J. HollanderSaving the Family Cottage: A Guide to Succession Planning for Your Cottage, Cabin, Camp or Vacation Home
by Stuart J. Hollander
with a foreword by
Deborah Wyatt Fellows, Publisher, Traverse the Magazine

Published by Pleasant City Press, LLC

The late Stuart Hollander has written the first “attorney authored” book for the vacation home owner. This book describes the problems inherent to shared cottage ownership and the concerns of parents who wish to pass it on. After a careful analysis of the pros and cons of different shared ownership arrangement, the author outlines his preferred method to help families preserve this valuable asset for generations to come. Using the stories from families he has worked with and clear graphic illustrations for the legal concepts involved, the book is reader friendly and informative. Although Hollander uses the term “cottage,” the principles of his book apply to any property that a family wants to retain, whether it is an Adirondack camp, an Upper Midwest cabin, a Western ranch, or an ocean, lake, or riverfront home. Written for the vacation home owner but with information that also will be useful to attorneys and financial planners, the book engages the reader with stories of cottage “wars” and planning gone awry. Narrative examples and easy-to-follow graphics illustrate the more technical aspects of succession planning for a vacation home. The book makes a complex problem understandable and offers methods to help keep a second home in the family for generations.

Christensen pens a scintillating comedy of life among the avant-garde–of the untidy truths, needy egos, and jostling for position behind the glossy facadeof artistic greatness–in this story of a New York City painter living in the heroic generation of the 1940s and 1950s.

Oscar Feldman, the renowned figurative painter, has passed away. As his obituary notes, Oscar is survived by his wife, Abigail, their son, Ethan, and his sister, the well-known abstract painter Maxine Feldman. What the obituary does not note, however, is that Oscar is also survived by his longtime mistress, Teddy St. Cloud, and their daughters. As two biographers interview the women in an attempt to set the record straight, the open secret of his affair reaches a boiling point and a devastating skeleton threatens to come to light. From the acclaimed author of “The Epicure’s Lament,” a scintillating novel of secrets, love, and legacy in the New York art world.

Oil is king of East Texas during the darkest years of the Great Depression. The Stoddard girls–responsible Mayme, whip-smart tomboy Jeanine, and bookish Bea–know no life but an itinerant one, trailing their father from town to town as he searches for work on the pipelines and derricks. But in a year of devastating drought and dust storms, the family’s fortunes sink further than they ever anticipated when a questionable “accident” leaves the girls and their mother, Elizabeth, alone to confront the cruelest hardships of these hardest of times.

Returning to their previously abandoned family farm, the resilient Stoddard women must now place their last hopes for salvation in a wildcat oil well that eats up what little they have left . . . and on the back of late patriarch Jack’s one true legacy, a dangerous racehorse named Smoky Joe.
