NORTHPORT — Every day is flag day at the Spartan Flag Company.

But it’s not the kind of Flag Day that Americans will celebrate June 14 when they pay respect to the Stars and Stripes.

In fact, the Spartan Flag Company no longer produces American flags.

“About 90 to 95 percent of our business now is golf course flags,” said Casey Kilcherman, who took over ownership of Spartan Flag about four-and-a-half years ago.

“We produce them for a company in Iowa who distributes our golf flags all over the world. We’ve gotten real busy with golf in the past year.”

Spartan Flag is set to get national attention this week when their flags fly over the U.S. Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in southern California.

“We did 1,000 flags for the U.S. Open,” said Kilcherman. “We did one run that was numbered one through 18 for the course, then a second order that was just numbered 18 for souvenirs.”
