Ask me someday to relate the story of Chris Ware's (my brother-in-law) 2005 Moose Hunting Adventure to Canada. Not only did he come back with the great sounds of old and new bulls, he had equally as great stories of the cow sounds made while trying to answer to the bull moose calls. He was again awed with the massive size of these great creatures. Their adventure began when they arrived and traveled upstream to fish - without even unpacking and setting up camp - and to stretch out and sun themselves on the huge flat stones along the banks of the stream. There were a few final departure delays caused by a freak snowstorm which kept them holed up for a few days time until the skies cleared and enabled their ability to fly out of this heavily wooded northern Canadian wilderness. Chris came back with humorous stories of where the original bear cub came from that eventually made its way to England to live with a boy named Christopher Robin, and later became world famous as Winnie the Pooh.

It's Not Just A Lifestyle, It's An Adventure!

"Scene" Around Known Books . . .
January 10th, 2006 - Author Jerry Dennis and renowned artist and illustator Glenn Wolff!

A pleasant surprise indeed! Jerry and Glenn stopped in after doing a presentation to a crowd of 60 attendees at a function sponsored by the Inland Seas Education Association. The topic for the talk was based upon Jerry's most recent, and I might add, very bestselling, work "The Living Great Lakes."

Also discussed and presented were details from "It's Raining Frogs and Fishes" which was written by Jerry Dennis and lavishly illustrated by Glenn Wolff. Known Books is lucky enough to have a limited supply of First Edition hardcover copies (long out of print) of "It's Raining Frogs and Fishes" of which all copies have been signed by both Jerry Dennis and Glenn Wolff.

Suttons Bay is lucky enough to have a delightful full-bulding mural painted by Glenn Wolff. It is on the bay side of the BP Oil gas station building which faces the Inland Seas Education Association building. Access it down the alley entrance to Boone's Prime Time. (This alley also used to be the rail bed when the train ran through town!)

How many of us have an answer ready when our children ask that tough and inevitable question: "Why is the sky blue?"

It's Raining Frogs and Fishes is a generously illustrated inquiry into dozens of the natural world's most interesting and baffling phenomena:

-Where do meteors and comets originate?

-What causes rainbows, mirages, and the colors of the sunset?

-Why does it rain from some clouds and not from others?

-Is it true that no two snowflakes are alike?

-What are the mechanics of such spectacular events as blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes, and thunderstorms?

-Why do some birds migrate, and how do they navigate over hundreds - sometimes thousands - of miles to do it?

-How have civilizations throughout history dealt with such powerful and seemingly inexplicable occurrences as the aurora borealis, windstorms, eclipses, and the bizarre but well-documented cases of fish, reptiles, snails, and even snakes that have rained to earth?

Author Jerry Dennis and Illustrator Glenn Wolff approach such troublesome questions with curiosity and wonder, and suggest ways to observe firsthand extraordinary weather, astronomical anomalies, and odd and interesting wildlife of the skies. Each subject is arranged by season and discussed in a concise, lively, and entertaining essay that blends the most recent scientific findings with historical anecdotes, personal observations, and examples of the lore and superstitions that have always surrounded phenomena of the natural world.

From the Introduction:

We wanted to know the world and how it works - not to conquer it, but because the knowledge enhances our pleasure and deepens our appreciation. Someone once said that watching nature is a feast for the heart while understanding nature is a feast for the mind. Children, poets, and scientists have made it apparent that humans are hungry in both heart and mind. Watching is not enough. We crave answers.

This book is our effort to answer some of the questions kids ask, that adults would ask if we weren't quite so afraid of sounding childlike. We've tried to make the book as useful as possible, dividing it by season into four sections, so it can be used as a kind of field guide. Hopefully it will anticipate some excellent questions. Perhaps it will make heroes of a few parents. With luck it will add to the enjoyment of a most bountiful feast.

After ten years on the main downtown street Known Books has moved to our new location across the street, and down by Suttons Bay in the lower level of the Millside Building. The building address is 101 Dame Street.

Finding the building is easy! Turn onto the street between the BP Oil gas station and Roman Wheel Pizza (Dame Street) and head towards the bay. We will be on your left. We are the last building closest to the water. You can't get any closer to the water without being in a boat! Our neighbor on the other side of Dame Street is Inland Seas Education Association, home of the SchoolShip. Tom Kelly, the director of the school was telling me the other day that they have a great display and gift shop inside. (He's correct, I spent some time wandering inside their huge building - it used to house Northern Lumber!)

Suttons Bay is located about 15 miles (about 20 minutes if traveling the speed limit!) north of Traverse City on M-22.

Suttons Bay is a lovely year 'round village surrounded to the east by the bay, and snuggged in under the hills along the shore.

Our downtown main street business district is lined with shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, a movie theatre and a few antique and resale shops.
